For each orientation, the sheet's printable area (sheet minus margins) is divided by the piece size plus the gutter: columns = floor((printableWidth + gutter) ÷ (pieceWidth + gutter)), same for rows. The calculator tries the piece upright and rotated 90° and keeps whichever fits more. Utilization is the finished-piece area times the count, divided by the total sheet area — the rest of the sheet is margins, gutters, and trim-off.
Common results: business cards (3.5×2) run 24-up on 12×18 at 78% utilization; 4×6 postcards run 8-up; 5×7 invitations run 4-up. On DTF gang sheets, rotate-and-pack matters even more — a 22×60 roll holds 40 of a 4×5 transfer with a 0.5" gutter.
